Exfoliate!
Everyone should exfoliate their skin at least once a week. Regular removal of dull and dead skin cells is essential, especially on your face, as this encourages your skin to secrete Sebum. This is the skin's natural oil which contains fatty acids to fight infections and bacteria, so regular exfoliation also means you're probably less likely to have breakouts!
There are a few other good reasons you should exfoliate frequently. Not only is it beneficial to your skin and skin cell regeneration, it leaves you feeling soft and smooth all over which gives you a great base to apply your foundation or self tan (its always a good idea to exfoliate if you are going to use a tanning product, you don't want streaky legs). Face exfoliants give a healthy, natural glow to the skin.
There are so many different exfoliating products or 'body scrub's on the market from the exfoliant itself to the sponge or mitt you apply it with! The majority of exfoliants are gel based substances containing salt or sand grains and you can also get some containing sugar. There are also many, many D.I.Y options which can be found over the internet.
Exfoliating your body...
Loofahs and mitts are ideal to exfoliate your body with. New loofahs (which are actually dead plants) should be used with caution, used too vigorously on sensitive skin can cause irritation and leave scratch marks, always use a loofah n the roughest parts of your body first. This will soften your skin and also soften the loofah so you are then able to use it on softer skin. They can be used with an exfoliant or just your usual shower gel.
Mitts are ideal if you have sensitive skin, they aren't has harsh or rough as a loofah but still buff your skin leaving it feeling soft and smooth. Again, they can be used with an exfoliating product or shower gel as they are already textured.
I usually use a sugar scub on my body with an exfoliating mitt to massage the skin. Sometimes its a good idea to exfoliate using your hands (with a scrub) as you can control how hard you scrub and where you use it.
Exfoliating your face!
Your skin is more sensitive on your face than your body, therefore it is a good idea to use a milder face scrub. Mitts or face towels (flannels) are suitable for exfoliation on your face if used gently, but using the tips of your fingers is another good way to control where and how hard you scrub on certain areas of your face. Like I mentioned before, it is important to exfoliate your face, remove dead skin cells and prompt secretion of natural oils which could in turn, decrease breakouts and blackheads whilst leaving your skin fresh and glowing.
Last but not least, exfoliating your feet!
Your feet are likely to be the greatest 'problem area' for rough skin. Because of this, there are many scrubs available designed specifically for them. Foot scrubs are usually more 'heavy duty' than your average body scrub to really smooth away the hard or dead skin cells on your soles and heels. Another method of exfoliating your feet is to use a pumice stone. These are rough textured to smooth and soften the skin of your feet.
Exfoliating once or twice a week is plenty enough to get rid of rough or dead skin and leave you with a sought after smooth and healthy glow.
